    Emma Humphreys Waco Artist

    Humphreys, Emma (Mrs. Samuel B. Humphreys). b.1858. Waco, Painter, teacher.
        Born in Danville, Alabama, Humphreys moved to Waco where her well-known uncles, Reverends Richard Byrd Burleson and Rufus C. Burleson, had settled around 1860.  She graduated from Waco University before it merged in 1886 with Baylor University, then continued her art studies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and in Chautauqua, New York.  She was a student of Vincent Nowottny. Humphreys was principal  of the Baylor art department (1891-1901) and taught under the trade name Waco Conservatory of Music and Art (1904-5).
        Exhibitions: Annual Texas Cotton Palace Exposition, Waco (1911).
        Collections: Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, Waco.
        Affiliations: Waco Art League (charter member).
